AUTUMN TERM
Literacy, Language and Communication
This term we will be writing a discursive text about evacuation and a nonchronological report on what life was like for children in World War 2. We will also be writing newspaper reports on the Blitz in Cardiff and analysing sources of evidence from World War 2.
In our reading sessions we will be reading The Valley of Lost Secrets.
Science and Technology
We will be looking at the Blitz and what materials were the best to make blackout curtains. We will look at the different planes used during World War 2 and identify which ones were the most aerodynamic. We will also be looking at Morse code and creating our own circuits to allow us to send messages to each other.
We will use micro:bits to send morse code message and create air raid sirens. We will also make toy teddy bears for evacuees.
Expressive Arts
This term we will look at the artwork of Georgia O’Keefe Henry Moore. We will experiment with the different techniques that they used to create their art work.
Humanities
We will be finding out about World War 2. How did World War 2 begin and what countries were involved? Who were the leaders of the main countries involved in the war? What was life like for the people of Britain living during the Blitz?
The children will be learning all about what life was like for the children evacuated from the cities and experience this for themselves when they dress up as evacuees for the day.
They will also learn about the children who were evacuated from Europe during World War 2 and use Digi maps to plot the route that these children took on their route to safety.
Mathematics
As well as consolidating our Maths skills, we will be doing some code breaking, using algebra and creating their own gas masks and gas mask boxes.
We will find out about the rations that people received throughout the war and work out how much food our families would receive each week.
Health and Well Being
As part of Black History month we will learn about some of the black soldiers who fought in World War 2 and the discrimination that they faced.
We will learn about Jessie Owens, the Tuskegee Airmen and the black soldiers based in Abersychan during World War 2.
DCF
Throughout our topic we will use a range of software including Digimaps, Adobe Express and Micro:bits. The children will be taught how to create and design a digital profile using google sites.
They will further develop their computer using the google classroom, sheets, docs and slides.
The children also continue learning about online safety.
