In Year 6 our children will be exploring “What was like for Children in World War 2?”

Literacy, Language and Communication

This term we will be writing a discursive text about evacuation and a non chronological report on what life was like for children in world War 2.  We will also be writing newspaper reports on the Blitz in Cardiff and analysing sources of evidence from World War 2.  In our reading sessions we will be reading The Valley of the Lost Secrets.

Science and Technology

We will be looking at the Blitz and what materials were the best to make blackout curtains.  We will also explore the effect different coloured lights would have on the amount of light shown through the curtains.  We will use micro:bits to send morse code messages and create air raid sirens.

Expressive Arts

This term we will look at the artwork of Georgia O’Keefe and Henry Moore.  We will experiment with the different techniques that they used to create their art work.

We will also be learning how to play the ukulele.

Humanities

This term we will be finding out about World War 2.  We will find out how World War 2 started and what countries were involved.  We will research the leaders of the main countries involved in the war and look in detail at what life was like for the people of Britain during the Blitz.  The children will find out what life was like for children evacuated from the cities and experience this for themselves when they dress up as evacuees for the day.  

RVE

Key Question – What does it mean to offer sanctuary and how do values guide us when life is turned upside down?  

We will be looking at how we define home and the feeling of belonging.   We will look at the message from different religions and discuss: Is helping someone in need a choice or a moral obligation? 

We will also be learning about Nicholas Winton and the Kindertransport, discussing what it means to be an “upstander.”

Mathematics

We will be consolidating our Maths skills in place value to millions, rounding, adding using mental and written strategies and subtracting using mental and written strategies.

We will also do some code breaking and use our measuring skills to measure the dimensions of an Anderson Shelter. We will find out about the rations that people received throughout the war and work out how much food our families would receive each week.  

Health and Wellbeing

As part of black history month we will learn about some of the black soldiers who fought in World War 2 (Tuskegee Airmen) and the discrimination that they faced.  We will also learn about the people from other countries who fought alongside Britain during World War 2 including the black soldiers based in Abersychan during WW2.

DCF

Throughout our topic we will use a range of software including Digimaps, Adobe Express and Micro:bits.  The children will be taught how to create and design a digital profile using Google sites.  They will further develop their computer skills using Google Classroom, sheets, docs and slides.  

The children will also be learning about online safety.
