This term the children in Year 2 will be exploring the question:

How do we use light to celebrate?

Literacy, Language and Communication

This term the children will be writing a recount of the story of Rama and Sita. We will then write an explanation text all about Diwali and explore firework-based poetry. Next, we will move onto explore Hanukkah. We will share the story of Hanukkah Bear and create a set of instructions on how to catch this mischievous bear. 

Daily Read Write Inc sessions will be held to support sound knowledge, spelling and reading. We will also run Guided Reading sessions where the children will be exposed to a range of text types.

Science and Technology

We will be investigating light and how shadows are formed. The children will write their predictions and record their findings.

We will also explore and investigate how rainbows are formed.

Expressive Arts

Through our exploration of Diwali, we will be creating Rangoli patterns in the outdoor environment using chalks.

We will design and create Diva lamps and create firework art using printing and scratch art.

Humanities

The children will discover the festivals of Diwali and Hanukkah. We will explore why these festivals are celebrated and transform our classroom to reflect the different festivals.

We will discuss the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and it’s reasoning for our annual celebration of Bonfire Night.

Mathematics

We will be looking at Place Value using partitioning girds, Place Value boards, counters and dienes. The children will then use their knowledge of number to answer addition and subtractions sums.

We will explore lines of symmetry and create our own symmetrical patterns. Names of 2D and 3D shapes will be a focus around Christmas time as we unwrap different shaped gifts.

Through the medium of Welsh, the children will create graphs to share eye and hair colour.

Health and Wellbeing

Basic movements and coordination will be a main focus this term.  The children will be encouraged to communicate their thoughts and feelings.

Children will be building their confidence to take part in group discussions.

DCF

We will support the children to log into Chromebooks with independence. Links will be given for the children to follow and access maths and literacy resources.

Children will learn to insert text and images. TAGUL will be used to create word clouds.
