Dosbarth Oren

Year 1 / 2

Croeso i'r Dosbarth Oren

The following information about Year 2 may be helpful.  Upcoming or daily events are communicated via Schoop (our school messaging platform), newsletters, and our school website. Our Twitter page @bhvcprimary shows how much work we have done in Year 2 each week!
Spring Term
This term our topic is Darwin’s Delights. We will be enquiring if dinosaurs could survive today. After sharing our Spring topic with year 2, they have shared lots of interesting and exciting things that they would like to learn.

Through Expressive Arts, Health & Wellbeing, Humanities and Science & Technology we will be exploring the key question, ‘Could Dinosaurs Survive Today?’.

Expressive Arts
We will be exploring and experimenting with appropriate tools and techniques to extract fossils. We will be using salt dough to create our very own fossils and explore patterns.

Science & Technology
We will be sorting and classifying dinosaurs, collecting and recording information for data purposes. Researching dinosaur habitats and their life cycles.

Health & Wellbeing
We will be looking at the diet of different dinosaurs and making comparisons to our own healthy diet. We will also be considering what physical activities dinosaurs were able to do (swimming, flying etc).

Humanities
We will be making timelines of significant events so the children can understand just how long-ago dinosaurs existed.

These are just a few of the ideas the children have shared with us in the early stages of planning our topic. We will go with the children’s ideas throughout the term to explore the key question further.

Autumn Term
This term our topic is Our Wonderful World. Year 2 have been using adjectives to describe our home town of Blaenavon.  We have enquired and explored lots of the lovely things that there is to do in Blaenavon.

Year 2 have received a very exciting letter from a school all the way from Fiji! The letter was asking us lots of questions about what it’s like to live in Wales and it also told us about what it’s like to live in Fiji. Some things are the same, but lots of things are different. Year 2 are going to be replying to the letter – We can’t wait to send a postcard, telling the children in Fiji all about the things we love about living in Wales.

Year 2 are going to be exploring the differences and learning all about the Fijian culture – We will be tasting their food, drinking their traditional drink, wearing their traditional clothing and much more!

In Maths, Year 2 have been learning all about place value, comparing numbers, ordering numbers and practicing our 10, 2 and 5 times table! Next, year 2 will be investigating temperature. We will use a thermometer to measure the temperature in Blaenavon daily and use our iPads to research what the temperature is in Fiji. We will be discussing which country is warmer or cooler and the reason why.

Year 2 have their Physical Development sessions every Thursday, so they can wear their kit to school.
