Our whole school topic this term is ‘Let There be Peace on Earth’. Year 1 children will be exploring how to make their classroom a better place. The children want to find ways to co-operate better with each other and learn about their differences. The children shared lots of interesting and exciting ideas and together at the start of term, and we have begun to plan our learning journey for Autumn Term.

Through Expressive Arts, Health & Wellbeing, Humanities and Science & Technology we will be exploring the key question, ‘How can we make our class a better place?’

Expressive Arts

We will be exploring and experimenting with appropriate tools and techniques to create a range of artwork and craft based on friendship. We will work together to make a game to share and make friendship tokens and cards. As a year group, we will sing and dance together, creating partner and small group dances.

Science & Technology

Our STEM area offers opportunities to explore building and challenges where we can plan and create structures. We will be measuring in non – standard units, recognising and writing numbers correctly in different contexts. We will use technology to enhance our learning and produce work using various apps and multi-media.

Health & Wellbeing

We will focus on the importance of friendship and healthy relationships. Healthy eating is very important to us, as is taking part in physical activity. Co-operating and team work will be important aspects in our PE Lessons. We always have time to reflect and a quiet space too.

Humanities

We will explore the seven days of Creation and how Christians show their love to God. We will learn to recognise Wales on a map and where Blaenavon is in relation to Cardiff.

These are just a few of the ideas the children have shared with us in the early stages of planning our topic. We will go with the children’s ideas throughout the term to explore the key question further.
