Little Voices

Little Voices
Little Voices Being Heard is The Observatory on Children’s Human Rights Big Lottery funded project. Using the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) the project supports and enables children and adults to work together in their communities to bring about positive change through participatory action research.

The project began in September 2018. Helen Dale is based in Swansea University and contacted us to see if we would be interested in the project. The school had previously been involved in a project with Helen 5 years ago, and were delighted when asked and accepted without any hesitation!

The pupils have decided to focus on what they can do as children to raise awareness on diabetes.

Little Voices Being Heard
As a result of this project the Little Voices along with the School and Eco Council were invited to The Senedd in Cardiff Bay. They were given a tour of the old National Assembly for Wales building where they took part in their own debate, made decorations for the Senedd christmas trees, met Elin Jones, Presiding Officer and Ann Jones, Deputy Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales.

In addition to this, they had the most amazing experience of going into the Viewing Gallery of the Senedd, and actually witness the election of Mark Drakeford, First Minister of Wales.

In March as part of their research the children are going to Swansea University. They will have a tour of the university and tour of the Diabetes Research Lab, where they have the opportunity to further their research by asking the experts a series of planned questions.

Amnesty International, in collaboration with Angelina Jolie are developing a picture book on Children’s Rights to go worldwide, celebrating 30 Years. Little Voices pupils have been asked to be part of this book. They met with Sheila from The Open University who made notes from our children’s ideas. 100 children have been involved in the book, only 3 groups in Wales- Blaenavon Heritage School being one of them. The book is due to be completed in March 2020. There will be a complimentary copy for each of our Little Voices children and a copy for the school. Our school name will also be printed in the book!
