CLASS STAFF

AUTUMN TERM
Our whole school topic this term is “So Will I.” In Year 5 the children will be exploring the question, “do animals and plants make the world a better place?”
This term pupils will be able to, investigate plant life and how animals adapt to their environment. We will be looking at the use of animals/plants in a human’s life, the power of pets, how plants/animals are beneficial to the environment, relationships between each other, food chains and endangered species.
Literacy, Language and Communication
Pupils will be able to explore different genres this term, persuasive letter writing when addressing the statement, “All zoos should be banned and closed for good.” We will then be moving on to looking at newspaper reports and developing an understanding for the correct layout, features and relevant Alan Peat sentences that we can use within our writing. The text we will be studying is called The Last Bear, where children will learn the value of the relationship between humans and animals.
Pupils will also be writing Epic Poetry for Remembrance Day, whereby they will be required to write a narrative, lengthy poem based on a soldier, learning about empathy.
Welsh
This term, pupils will be looking at a variety of sentence patterns like, beth wyt ti’n feddwl? Wyt ti’n cytuno? Their senses, using gweld, clywed, arogli to describe Bear Island using a word mat for support. The pupils will then learn past tense and write a recount based on April’s journey to Bear Island.
Science and Technology
Pupils will be learning about plant life this term. They will be investigating what a plant needs to survive and dissecting a flower to learn about the different parts and their function. Pupils will also gain an understanding of certain key vocabulary such as; migration, adaptation and hibernation.
Expressive Arts
Pupils will begin the term by creating a thankfulness garden, to demonstrate a variety of ways of how we can be thankful. Pupils will complete a tree which shows the class teacher things they like and things that mean something to them, that make them who they are. They will also be completing mission tasks that will allow the pupils to use their creativity and imagination to design what they think Bear Island might look like.
In addition to this, pupils will be asked to create a piece of art based upon War Horse inspired by a British wildlife artist named David Shepherd. Pupils will develop their collage, colouring, painting and fine line drawing skills this term.
Humanities
Pupils will be learning about different habitats and climates. We will also be looking at War horse and how animals were used and treated then compared to now.
In RVE, Year 5 will be focusing on the concept of God, looking at what the word God means or makes us feel, not necessarily what we believe in. Accepting differences across religious believers and non-believers and thinking about the qualities of being kind and respectful.
Mathematics
Pupils will become critical thinkers through lots of problem-solving activities such as; Place Value, rounding, doubling, halving, addition and subtraction column method and word problems. We will apply our skills then into our Learning Journals such as; creating poppy petal angles for Remembrance.
We will also be completing graph work representing the number of pets we have at home and timelines of the use of animals in chronological order.
Health and Wellbeing
Pupils will be learning about different emotions and how we can recognise that someone feels a certain way. Year 5 will be attending swimming lessons every Friday and our PE sessions will be on a Monday. Year 5 will be learning about the importance of practicing mindfulness and why we should celebrate differences.
DCF
This term pupils will be looking at private and personal information, looking at what information about you is ok to share online? They will also be learning about the choices they make every day when looking at the media we consume and create. Therefore, we will provide children with an understanding of what makes a media choice healthy or not.
Pupils will also be exploring the platform of Adobe for various pieces of work, using voice over and animation to develop their skills, as well as getting opportunities to work within our school studio on a year group project.
