We have been really excited to have the opportunity to work with ‘The Friends of the Green’ on an exciting wildlife project to help improve Charles Street Green.   The children in Our Eco Council made and sold sweet treats to parents at the Christmas concerts, raising money which we presented to Mr Evans. 

This money was used to purchase bulbs to plant by a memorial bench and our Eco Council joined Mr Evans to plant these and other bulbs on the green.   We are enjoying this wonderful collaboration to encourage more wildlife to the area and hope to work on some other projects in the future.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the Eco-Schools programme, our school is proud to be working towards becoming a Poop Free Zone, supporting the Eco-Schools themes of Litter, Health and Wellbeing, and Biodiversity. 

Pupils have actively participated in poop-spraying walks around the school grounds and local area, developing their understanding of hygiene, environmental responsibility and community care. Through this hands-on, real-life learning opportunity, children demonstrated positive attitudes, teamwork and a strong sense of civic responsibility, applying their learning beyond the classroom. 

This project provides clear evidence of pupil voice and pupil leadership, with children taking ownership of an environmental issue that directly affects their daily lives. It also shows meaningful community engagement and supports our curriculum aims around ethical, informed citizens. 

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Oliver James for generously donating the equipment that made this initiative possible and for supporting our Eco-Schools work. 

We are extremely proud of the commitment and maturity shown by our pupils and the positive impact they are making on their school and wider community. 

As part of our commitment to Eco Schools and learning about our local environment, pupils worked in partnership with the local council to celebrate 25 years of Blaenavon’s World Heritage Status. Children created meaningful contributions for a time capsule, sharing their own views of Blaenavon through artwork and written work, ensuring pupil voice was central to the project.

Pupils met with council representatives to take part in burying the time capsule, developing their understanding of heritage, sustainability, and community responsibility. This authentic learning experience supported the development of citizenship, sense of place, and respect for the environment, all key aspects of the Eco Schools programme.

The project concluded with a special celebration to recognise the children’s efforts and their positive contribution to the local community, demonstrating strong links between curriculum learning, sustainability, and community engagement.

We are thrilled to announce that our school has won a prize in the Waste Warriors Food Competition! This exciting project gave our pupils the opportunity to cook, explore healthy eating, and learn about reducing food waste.

Children took part in hands-on cooking activities, discovering how to use ingredients wisely and make nutritious, tasty meals. They also learned why reducing food waste is important for the environment and how small changes at home and in school can make a big difference.

This project not only supported pupils’ understanding of healthy eating and sustainability but also helped develop key life skills such as teamwork, independence, and confidence. Our Waste Warriors proudly shared their creations and learning with the school community.

We are incredibly proud of the children’s efforts and enthusiasm, and this award highlights our ongoing commitment to Eco-Schools principles and empowering pupils to become environmentally responsible citizens.

As a school we have been working towards becoming a Litter Free Zone, with children playing an active and enthusiastic role in keeping our school and local area clean and cared for. Through regular local litter picks, pupils have learned why litter is harmful to wildlife, our community and the environment – and how small actions can make a big difference. 

The children have shown fantastic teamwork, responsibility and pride as they helped collect litter safely, talked about reducing waste, and encouraged others to look after our shared spaces. Their positive attitudes and hard work have been truly inspiring. 

We would like to say a huge thank you to our local councillors for their ongoing support, and to Oliver James, who kindly came into school to talk to the children about litter and environmental responsibility, as well as donating litter-picking equipment to support our efforts. 

We are incredibly proud of the commitment and enthusiasm shown by our pupils. Together, we are helping to create a cleaner, greener and happier community for everyone.

As part of our ongoing commitment to our Eco ethos, pupils have been designing their own eco mascots to help them understand the importance of caring for the environment and making sustainable choices.

Through pupil-led discussions and creative design, the children created Ellie Energy, who reminds us to save energy, Robbie Recycle, who helps us learn how to reduce waste and recycle responsibly, and our newest mascot, Decarb Dan, who teaches us about reducing carbon and protecting our planet for the future.

This project placed pupil voice at the heart of learning and supported children in developing a clear understanding of sustainability, responsibility, and climate awareness. The mascots are now used across the school to reinforce key eco messages in an engaging and age-appropriate way.

This work demonstrates strong links between creativity, environmental education, and real-life learning, supporting both our Eco Schools journey and the development of informed, responsible citizens.

As part of a competition set by Torfaen Council, pupils were challenged to rename the local eco newspaper, previously known as The Trash Times. Through discussion, creativity and a strong focus on environmental messages, our children suggested the winning new title, “The Eco Echo.”

This project placed pupil voice at the centre of learning and encouraged children to think carefully about how positive environmental messages can be shared within the wider community. Winning the competition highlights the children’s growing understanding of sustainability, communication, and active citizenship.

We are extremely proud of the children’s achievement and their contribution to promoting eco awareness across Torfaen, further strengthening links between school, community and environmental responsibility.
